As a
scientific discipline and in practice knowledge in Finance rapidly
advances. Financial institutions have created numerous new ways to
manage risk, create flexibility and provide business opportunities
for themselves and their corporate and private clients. The finance
departments of large companies have learnt from financial
institutions and use derivates such as swaps, futures, and options
to achieve more with what they have.
Finance is
important for companies and it can be important for countries and
sometimes whole regions as the Asian financial crisis has shown.
Thus, the field of Finance is something that students should have an
interest in as it will be an important aspect of their work as
managers. Copeland et al sum it up rather aptly: “As usual, the best
students (and managers) possess rare intuition, initiative, common
sense, strong reading and writing skills, and the ability to work
well with others. But those with the greatest competitive advantage
also have strong technical training in the analytical and
quantitative skills of management. Modern finance theory emphasizes
these skills.” |
